Staying at Komako Peonies and Cottage Garden Accommodation you'll find no shortage of things to do. If you're stopping off from doing the Otago Central Rail Trail exploring is not a problem. Host Grant is licensed to transport passengers in his large four wheel drive vehicle or you can self-guide yourselves at the wheel of a rental vehicle from Trail Rentals.
Four wheel drive exploring with Maniototo born and bred Grant at the wheel can take you places far off the beaten track. Tours are custom tailored to budget, time and sense of adventure. There are some seriously high vertigo inducing sheep station tracks in this part of the country.
Otago Central Rail Trail… New Zealand's original and most popular walking and cycling trail. For information on everything about the Rail Trail visit the official website… www.otagocentralrailtrail.co.nz . Remember, Komako Peonies and Country Garden Accomodation is right on the Rail Trail just on the outskirts of Waipiata.
Curling at Naseby... taking advantage of the Southern Hemisphere's only international standard indoor curling rink. For all information visit … www.curling.co.nz
Trout fishing... here again Grant knows all the secret possies for hooking the big ones.
Hiking... there are tracks and trails galore. We also can organise to walk over sheep stations out of bounds to the general public.
Gold mining history... on the flanks of the Rock & Pillar range visit the old Hamiltons Diggings and Cemetery. Today there's hardly a stick of evidence that once 4000 people lived here. Then travel across north across the Maniototo the foothills of the Kakanui Range and the Keyburn Diggings before continuing to Dansey's Pass. Next stop is Naseby which was settled by gold miners in 1863. To end the day travel wets to St Bathans and its wonderful blue lake, once sizeable hill hill reduced by gold mining to a large hole in the ground now full of water.
The old Waipiata Sanatorium... in what was once the middle of nowhere the large 110 hospital complex makes for an incongruous sight. Most of the buildings were constructed in the 1920s to house sufferers of tuberculosis which at that time in New Zealand reached almost epidemic proportions. Today a multi-denominational Christian retreat, the old sanatorium is remarkable complete right down to the substantial nurses home with tennis court.
